Sustainability isn’t just a trend – it has become an essential design principle that requires metrics behind statements. Nowhere is this more apparent, or measurable, than in the bathroom.
From water-saving fittings to smarter materials, the choices you make can add up to something meaningful. Here’s how to create a space that’s both beautiful and responsible.
SMARTER FITTINGS
One of the simplest ways to reduce your bathroom’s environmental footprint is by updating taps and fittings to models that conserve water and energy by design.
Available in chrome or silk black, the new Ceralife taps from Ideal Standard combine contemporary style with built-in intelligence. Behind their refined silhouettes, designed by Roberto Palomba, lies a suite of eco technologies: flow regulators that reduce water use without compromising performance, the durable FirmaFlow® cartridge that lasts well beyond industry norms, and Diamatec® brass – a strong, resource-efficient material that cuts down on raw material consumption.
SHOWER WITH INTENTION
A good shower can make your day. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint. Ideal Standard’s Ceratherm shower systems use thermostatic PreciTherm® cartridges for precise temperature control and flow limiters to reduce water output to just 6 litres per minute. Other practical touches to bring comfort and control include 50 per cent EcoStop buttons and CoolBody technology.
THE RISE OF CONSCIOUS MATERIALS
Surfaces are evolving too. The most forward-thinking brands are putting material innovation at the heart of sustainable product design.
UltraFlat Evo shower trays, for example, are made from StoneTechTM, a durable material that incorporates up to 40 per cent recycled marble and production waste. Fiberglass-free and fully recyclable they can be repurposed at end of life – for example, in construction – closing the loop on bathroom waste.
In parallel, the Alu+ shower range is rewriting the rules on metals in the bathroom. Crafted from high-recycled-content aluminium and free from chrome or nickel, Alu+ pairs minimalist aesthetics with maximum intent. From its low sheen finishes to newly launched square designs and even matching beauty bars, it’s a quiet celebration of sustainable craftsmanship.
CLEAN SMARTER – ONE FLUSH IS ENOUGH
When it comes to toilets, innovation may not always be visible, but it’s never been more impactful. In 2024, a report from Water Footprint Calculator showed that 24 per cent of water- use in households could be traced back to the toilet alone.
The i.life O range, with its award-winning HydroTwist® technology, redefines flushing, using just 4.5 litres of water per flush – 1.5 litres below the European standards2. Thanks to its powerful vortex, that’s enough water per use to ensure a residue-free clean in a single flush – eliminating the need for a second. The rimless design makes cleaning easier and reduces the need for harsh detergents that can harm aquatic ecosystems.
DESIGNING THE DIFFERENCE
The shift towards greener interiors is about conscious, incremental choices: materials that last, products that use fewer resources, and design that’s as thoughtful as it is beautiful.
“With the right innovations, even the bathroom can become a space of positive change,” says Carina Detjen, ustainability Manager at Villeroy & Boch Group. “It’s about showing that sustainable living can also mean modern, comfortable living.”
